Safety Harbor, FL Photo Walk

As I finish up the REMAKE (DVconfidential 2.0) of this blog - that is scheduled to be launched next Monday - I stopped long enough to become the leader of this past week’s Photo Walk in Safety Harbor, Florida, for Scott Kelby’s Worldwide Photo Walk.

I met some absolutely great people who were also top notch photographers. I was so impressed with our whole group! There were about 45 of us who braved the rain, and on top of everyone being so polite and helpful to each other, everyone took really great photographs even in difficult conditions. As proof of this, in my first pass through all 316 images that were uploaded to our Safety Harbor Group Flickr account, I decided to pick out my Top 40. Would you believe that every single person (29 who uploaded + 1 that uploaded for multiple family members) was represented in that Top 40 list? It’s true! And that’s pretty amazing… I hope everyone is as happy with their images as I am looking at all of them! :-)

But there could only be one winner from our little group (to get the new Scott Kelby book) and that person was named: FSUDAFT on Flickr, who’s real name I believe is Michael Pino. He won for his shot appropriately titled Safety Harbor. I think he captured the essence of the day post-Fay (Tropical Storm/Hurricane), but he did it with great composition and in a new and unique way.

What I also really liked was that he had some other great photos taken that day, that were in a completely different style and photographic genre, that also turned out fantastic. For example, check out:

I also want to call a special attention to our two youngest photowalkers who put up absolutely fantastic images. If you haven’t taken a look at their photo-stream, you owe it to yourself to take a look. If I had 1/10th of their talent at their age… ;->

Katelynn Antonelli, age 13 - Photos

Nils Sheppard, age 10 - Photos

Now that the Photo Walk competition part is over (Scott will announce the worldwide winner on his Blog on Friday) I will go ahead and upload some of my shots to my Flickr account over the weekend. If you’re on Flickr and you want to connect with me, all you need to do is add me as a Contact. It’s real easy to do and here are instructions for 2 different ways to do this.

Adobe working on Flash support for the iPhone

In Adobe’s Quarterly Conference Call that took place earlier this week, they confirmed that they are working on a version of Flash that will work on the iPhone. You can see the full transcript of the call, but here’s the part that got my attention:

 Operator

We’ll go next to Ross MacMillan with Jeffries.

Ross MacMillan - Jeffries & Company

Thanks. Just a quick one on Acrobat 9. I noticed that your — at least some of the foreign language versions were shipping about eight days after English. Can you just remind us — is that typical with an Acrobat release that we see major foreign language versions ship pretty quickly after the English version? And then just to follow-up was on the Apple iPhone 3G — any update on Flash support within that device? Thanks.

Shantanu Narayen

So on the first question, we don’t typically give date by date of when we are shipping different language versions of our products. Clearly depending on when in the quarter we ship English, you might see some of the major foreign languages also ship in the quarter. And as I said earlier in my remarks, we do expect to see English, French, German, and Japanese for Acrobat ship in this quarter. And that depends more on quarter boundaries than anything else.

With respect to the iPhone, we are working on it. We have a version that’s working on the emulation. This is still on the computer and you know, we have to continue to move it from a test environment onto the device and continue to make it work. So we are pleased with the internal progress that we’ve made to date.

Saving money on Apple Gadget purchases

I’m off to Atlanta, GA to direct/shoot a commercial for Blue Cross/Blue Shield (in Spanish no less!) but I just got this email from Louis Ramirez over at the DealMac/DealNews Network. It is the best and most concise article I’ve seen written in a long time on saving money on buying Apple products. Those of us that have been Apple fans and gadget addicts for some time have figured out most of these great tips through trial and error over the years, but it’s nice to have a concise well written article on the subject to refer back to from time to time. For those of you that may be new to Apple Gadget Lust (AGL for short, and yes–it’s supposed to sound like a disease because it is) I am reprinting his email in its entirety below. Go check out Louis’ employer and the best Apple discount tracking site here.

How to save money on your next Apple purchase

The Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) kicked off this week with the announcement of the much-awaited iPhone 3G. While it may be less expensive than its predecessor, Apple products are still notorious for their high prices. So before you upgrade to the latest Apple gear, here are a few tips that’ll save you some money.Shop for discounts: Immediately after a new Apple product is released, government employees, military personnel, and students should turn to the Apple Federal Employee Purchase Program and the Apple Store for Education, respectively, and look for discounts that can save them as much as 10% off. Students can also take advantage of Apple’s current promotion and receive a free iPod Touch or iPod Nano with the purchase of a new Mac. Not eligible for the above discounts? Bring your current iPod to the Apple Store and get a 10% off discount toward the purchase of a new one.

Wait for combo deals: When it comes to buying Apple products, it doesn’t pay to be first in line. On the contrary, shoppers who wait a few days after an Apple announcement can take advantage of early Apple reseller deals. These deals typically consist of freebies, like a free RAM or hard drive upgrade with the purchase of a new Mac computer, or free cases, FM tuners, and engraving with the purchase of a new iPod. ExperCom is generally the first merchant to offer such deals, often on the same day the products are released, but also keep your eyes on MacMall and MacConnection.

Hit up the refurbs: Nobody wants to buy old tech, but if saving money is your mission, turn to the Apple Store’s Special Deals section for price drops on Apple’s just-discontinued items. Likewise, look for price drops on clearance and refurbished models. Unlike other manufacturers, Apple’s refurbs are of extremely high quality and many times are unused products that must be sold as refurbs.

Mail those rebates: Just a few weeks after a product announcement, expect to see stores like Amazon.com, MacMall, and MacConnection release mail-in rebate promotions for Apple’s product du jour. Past Amazon rebates have included $150 off MacBook Pro laptops and Mac Pro workstations, as well as $50 off the MacBook Air.

Shop in other states: When shopping for Apple products, consider shopping from out of state merchants. Do so and you can dodge paying the sales tax for the state you reside in, saving upwards of 9% off your purchase.

Become a late adopter: When all else fails, take the hands off approach. Wait five to six months into a product’s life cycle and then look for deals and rebates. Sure, that may feel like an eternity in the gadget industry, but that’s when refurb prices are at their lowest and when you’ll see the best discounts on Apple merchandise.

iPhone 3G still more expensive than previous model

iphone3gatt.jpg

(click on image for larger size)

Here’s my favorite unofficial picture (wish I knew who created it) from yesterday’s announcement of the Apple iPhone 3G. While the iPhone 3G hardware price has been cut in half to $199, the mandatory AT&T Data Plan has actually gone up (from its current $20 monthly plan) to a total of $30 a month. With a mandatory 2-year contract, that extra $10 a month adds an extra $240 to the price tag… actually making the package $40 MORE expensive than the 1.0 version of the iPhone. Here’s how that math works out:

iPhone 1.0 = $399 | 2 Year AT&T Data Plan = $480 | $399 + $480 = $879

iPhone 3G= $199 | 2 Year AT&T Data Plan = $720 | $199 + $720 = $919

Not that ANY of this is going to keep me from getting a new 3G iPhone! :-) I just wanted to point out that it’s still about the same price, it’s just a different way of getting that same money from the customer. But now at least the customer gets 3G and GPS!

And for those that are concerned that their iPhone 1.0 will have lost all of its value on resale (because of of the $199 3G price tag), I would argue that the 1.0 models are now more valuable than ever. Because the iPhone 3G is ONLY available for $199 with a mandatory 2 year contract and in-store activation, it means that if you choose to jailbreak your iPhone 3G you’re still stuck with a 2 year contract or an early termination fee. For a lot of people that still want to run the iPhone on a different carrier than AT&T and be able to install free apps (vs. paying for them in the App Store), the iPhone 1.0 model will remain in HIGH demand.

National Press Photographers and video

As Journal-World still photographers shoot more video for online stories, they are learning how different it is from still photography. Tips that have helped in shooting video include using a tripod and planning for sequences.
From LJWorld.com | Photo by Mike Yoder

In a few hours I’m off to speak to members of the National Press Photographers Association on behalf of Adobe. I’ll be doing this at their Annual Meeting, Convergence 08, Friday and Saturday, May 30 - 31, 2008, at the Downtown Marriott in beautiful Louisville, Kentucky. Now you may be wondering, “Why is Adobe sending Rod, a video guy (with a lot of photography buddies), to speak to the who’s who of Press photographers? Well, it turns out that more and more press photographers are now being asked to shoot video (mainly for their company media websites) while they are out on assignment. In fact, I even found this post on the Journal-World website written by Mike Yoder about this specific issue. Here’s an excerpt:

From my background in still photography to my initial forays into video, I’ve learned a few things that have helped me make the transition. Here are three beginner’s tips that have helped me in my introduction to video and might help other still camera enthusiasts make the transition.

1. The 10-second rule. This was one of the first things I was taught and have stuck with when shooting anything with a video camera. Once you have framed up a shot and hit record, let the camera run for at least 10 full seconds before thinking about hitting the stop button. Shorter pieces of video are difficult to edit into useful sequences.

2. Use a tripod. Unless you are doing a remake of “The Blair Witch Project” or you just enjoy making your family and friends dizzy, you should use a tripod to avoid unnecessary camera shake. If you don’t have a tripod look for flat surfaces or other ways to support and steady your camera.

3. Think in sequences. To best tell stories in video, different points of view need to be linked together to provide the viewer with movement and varied perspective. Coming from a still photographer’s experience, this is not hard to understand, but it has been harder to apply to video than I imagined. Still photographers move around a subject and shoot photographs from different perspectives with the goal of capturing just one moment — that single shot that best documents the subject.

You can read the complete article by going here.

The only thing I would add to his 3 points above would be about the 10 second rule in his first point. What you really want to make sure you have is at least 3 seconds of video before and 3 seconds of video after your main point/imagery that your recording with your camera. You never know if you’re going to need that extra “handle” on your clips to roll under an opening graphics/animation intro or for a longer worded lower third that takes longer to read or even for a slower transition from a previous clip. It’s just always better to be safe than sorry.

Mike Wallace 90th Birthday

Today is Mike Wallace’s 90th Birthday. The 60 Minutes star has done more for television news than anyone in the history of the medium. I hope I look half as good as him at his age and I’ll be thrilled if I’ve even accomplished 1/100th of what he has accomplished in his life. Take a look at this column to see who he has interviewed the last 60+ years.

Mike still goes into work everyday (at 60 minutes) and still gets some of the biggest interviews in the business. Take a look at the video below to see what his pal Andy rooney has to say about the guy and for a quick retrospective on Mike’s life. It really is amazing.

Epson DiscProducer Disc Duplication and Printing System

Epson Duplicator Discproducer PP-100Well, I’ve been a very bad blogger recently… hardly writing much of anything… so I thought I’d post this interesting bit about Epson’s new Disc Producer system. It’s a desktop CD/DVD disc publisher that is designed to burn and print up to 100 customized CDs or DVDs on demand. And, with one set of high-capacity ink cartridges, it’s reported to create over 1,000 discs, which is a lot more than I get with my current sytem. Discproducer features a built-in 6-color inkjet printer, with Epson’s MicroPiezo® technology, and Total Disc Maker software that lets you format data, edit labels and control the production process all from one application.

1. Ink level status LED

2. Six separate ink cartridges

3. Three media trays for runs of up to 100

4. Robotic arm

The Epson Discproducer™ is the only product of its type (that I know of) that shows ink status for each individual color using LED. It is said to have a street price of around $3500 when it starts shipping in quantity later this month. While I find that price a little high for a unit that doesn’t have a computer built it (most do in this price range) it will be interesting to see if it can live up to it’s promise of printing 1,000 discs with only a single set of ink cartridges. I’m on a waiting list for a review unit with a tentative delivery date in about 4 to 6 weeks.

You can get the datasheet and the press releases here. After the jump I have a very interesting Flash video file that gives a complete workflow of the unit. Definitely worth clicking through to watch…
